As a seasoned liability underwriter, what have been some key highlights of your career in the insurance industry?
Looking back on my career so far, one of the most rewarding parts has been seeing the industry evolve—particularly the rise in opportunities and representation for women in leadership. It's a shift that inspires real pride. Just as meaningful has been watching the careers of those I started out with flourish. Seeing former peers grow into respected professionals across the industry is a reminder of how far we’ve all come. The journey continues, and I’m energised by what lies ahead—for both the industry and the people driving it forward.
What attracted you to Halo as a career step? What’s the most important factor when you think about your workplace/career?
Joining Halo was a decision shaped by trust, respect, and shared values. Having previously worked with many of the leaders here, I knew I was stepping into a space guided by integrity, vision, and experience. What made the opportunity truly stand out was the autonomy and trust they offered from day one—a rare and motivating combination.
As I reflect on what matters most in any role, it’s clear that cultural alignment outweighs any financial incentive. Being part of a team that values collaboration, support, and authenticity has been key. It’s in this kind of environment—where people feel seen, supported, and empowered—that the best work happens. And that’s exactly what drew me to Halo, and what keeps me energised for what’s ahead.
The Halo proposition is all about having an ‘appetite for business’. What does this mean and how do you deliver on it personally / as a team?
An appetite for business, to me, is grounded in proactive, solution-oriented underwriting. At Halo, this mindset drives how we engage with our broker partners—working collaboratively to understand the nuances of each risk and exploring every viable avenue to deliver value.
Rather than defaulting to a “no,” we focus on finding the “yes”—seeking ways to support brokers and clients through open dialogue, creative thinking, and a deep understanding of their needs. This approach not only fosters stronger relationships but also reinforces our commitment to being a partner that prioritises outcomes over obstacles.
By embedding this philosophy into our underwriting practices, we ensure that our appetite isn’t just about risk selection—it’s about building trust, delivering solutions, and strengthening our role as an enabler of business success.
So far, what has been the most rewarding aspect of contributing to the Halo offering / what are you most looking forward to in future?
Joining Halo at such a pivotal point—on the back of its strong early success and clear upward momentum—has been incredibly rewarding. The energy and drive within the business are tangible, and it’s exciting to be part of a team that’s rapidly establishing itself as a respected player in the market.
Looking ahead, my focus is on contributing to Halo’s continued growth by helping to deepen broker relationships, strengthen our underwriting capability, and support the development of scalable, sustainable solutions. As we expand our footprint, maintaining our agility and commitment to service excellence will be key to long-term success.
Equally important is investing in our people and culture—ensuring that we remain a collaborative, high-performing team where individuals feel empowered to grow and succeed. By combining market insight, technical strength, and a values-led approach, I’m confident that Halo is well-positioned to build on its momentum and shape a lasting impact across the industry.
For anyone considering a career in insurance and starting out as an insurance underwriter, what tips would you have to offer?
Don’t Compare Journeys: Success in this industry is rarely linear. Everyone progresses at their own pace, and comparing your path to others can often lead to unnecessary pressure. Focus on your own growth and development—it’s a long game.
Find the Right Mentor: Seek out a mentor whose values, experience, and leadership style resonate with you. A strong mentor relationship can provide guidance, perspective, and encouragement through every stage of your career.
Stay Curious and Keep Learning: The insurance landscape is constantly evolving. Staying open to new ideas, products, and market shifts will keep you ahead. Whether through formal training, industry news, or hands-on experience, continuous learning is one of the best ways to stay relevant and resilient.
Embrace Change with Confidence: The pace of change in this industry can be fast but viewing it as an opportunity rather than a threat is critical. Be open to new challenges, remain flexible in your thinking, and approach uncertainty with a problem-solving mindset. Growth often comes from the unfamiliar.
In a fast-moving and complex industry, these foundational habits—self-awareness, mentorship, learning, and a forward-thinking approach—can pave the way for long-term success and fulfilment.
