Janelle Karnib Introduction Interview

Janelle Karnib, National Relationship Manager and Co-Founder of Marinex Underwriting, talking about making the jump from corporate to startup, and her passion for building a business that answers the needs of Australian brokers.

Tell us a little about your journey to get to where you are today, launching an Underwriting agency.

Throughout my 24-year career, I’ve been deeply involved in the marine insurance industry, working with both a global insurer and a specialized Australian Underwriting Agency. My journey began with a strong foundation in underwriting and relationship management where I honed my skills in navigating the complex and ever-evolving marine insurance landscape. Over the years, I’ve built a deep understanding of the unique needs and challenges within this sector, allowing me to deliver tailored solutions to brokers and their customers.

My experience has not only shaped my technical expertise but also fueled my passion for the marine industry. This passion, coupled with a desire to innovate and create more customer-centric offerings led me to take the leap and launch my own underwriting agency. My goal is to leverage the insights and relationships I’ve cultivated over the years to provide a specialized, flexible and responsive service that truly meets the needs of the marine insurance brokers in Australia.

What made you decide it was time to launch your own brand? What gave you confidence to make the jump?

The decision to launch my own brand was the culmination of years of experience, a deep understanding of the market, and a clear vision of what I wanted to achieve in the marine insurance space. Over my career, I observed gaps in the market where brokers and their customers’ needs were not fully met, particularly when it came to specialized, personalized service. I knew that with my expertise, industry relationships, and passion for the marine sector, I could create a brand that would address these needs more effectively.

What gave me the confidence to make the jump was the support and trust I’ve built with brokers, their customers, colleagues, and industry partners over the years. Their encouragement and belief in my capabilities reinforced my decision. Additionally, the opportunity to shape a business that reflects my values and vision was simply too compelling to pass up.

You have worked in the industry a long time and know the Australian broker market very well. What do you think is required of a new marine agency, and how will Marinex be delivering this?

Having worked in the industry for over two decades and having developed a deep understanding of the Australian broker market, I believe that a successful new marine agency must prioritize agility, specialization, and customer-centricity. The marine insurance sector is highly dynamic, with risks and requirements that can vary significantly across different customers and regions. Brokers need an agency that can respond quickly to these changing needs with tailored solutions and expert advice.

Marinex is designed to deliver on these fronts. We are committed to providing a level of specialization that truly understands the nuances of marine risks, supported by our decades of industry experience.
In essence, Marinex is about combining deep industry knowledge with innovative approaches to create an agency that meets the modern demands of brokers and their customers. We are here to set a new standard in marine insurance, where the brokers’ needs are at the forefront of everything we do.

Growing a start-up agency from scratch is a big challenge. How do you intend to tackle this and how are you feeling about it?

Growing a startup agency from scratch is indeed a significant challenge, but its one that I’m approaching with a mix of excitement, determination, and careful planning. My strategy for tackling this challenge revolves around leveraging the deep industry knowledge and relationships I’ve built over the years. From day one, I’m focused on building a strong foundation, starting with a clear vision for Marinex and a commitment to delivering exceptional service to our broker partners and their customers.

One of the key factors in our approach is staying agile and adaptable. As a startup, we have the advantage of being able to move quickly and innovate without the constraints that larger, more established companies often face. This agility will allow us to respond to market demands and client needs more effectively, giving us an edge in a competitive environment.

I’m also placing a strong emphasis on collaboration and building a team that shares the same passion and dedication to the marine sector as I do. I will be surrounding myself with experienced professionals who are equally committed to the success of Marinex and I’m confident we can overcome the challenges that come our way.

As for how I’m feeling about it, I’m incredibly optimistic. Starting Marinex is the culmination of years of experience and a long-held vision, and I believe the timing is right. While there will undoubtedly be obstacles, I’m motivated by the opportunity to create something new and impactful in the industry. The challenge excites me, and I’m fully committed to making Marinex a success.

One of the hardest things to orchestrate in a small business is culture. As a key leader with Marinex, how will you be helping to develop a culture of success. What does this look like?

As a key leader, I’m deeply committed to fostering a culture of success, one that not only motivates our team but also aligns with the values and vision we’ve set for the agency. My approach to developing this culture starts with clear communication and transparency. Creating an environment where everyone understands our goals, feels empowered to contribute, and knows their input is valued is essential. Open dialogue and regular feedback will ensure that every team member feels connected to our mission and confident in their role. Collaboration will be another crucial element of our culture. At Marinex, success will be a team effort, and I want to build a workplace where we support each other, share knowledge, and work together to overcome challenges.

Ultimately, a culture of success at Marinex looks like a team that is passionate, engaged, aligned with our shared vision. It’s about creating a workplace where people are excited to come to work, feel valued and inspired, and are driven to achieve excellence together. Prioritizing these values from the outset will help us build a culture that not only supports our business goals but also creates a positive, thriving environment for everyone involved.

What are you most looking forward to over the coming year, as Marinex starts to grow and take its position in the marketplace?

As Marinex begins to grow and establish itself in the marketplace, I’m most looking forward to seeing our vision come to life. The opportunity to build a brand that truly reflects our commitment to the marine insurance industry and our brokers and customers is incredibly exciting. I’m eager to enhance existing relationships with brokers and their customers, offering them tailored solutions that set a new standard in marine insurance.

I’m also excited about the chance to innovate and adapt as we navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with being a new player in the market. Watching our team collaborate, bring fresh ideas to the table, and grow together will be incredibly rewarding. It’s the start of a new journey, and I’m thrilled to be part of it and see how Marinex will evolve and make its mark in the industry.
